The Päijätsalo Hiking Area is one of the most popular locations for day trips in Päijät-Häme. You can start the trail at the Päijätsalo car park in Sorolantie Road, or at Pyydysniemi, where you can combine the hike with a boat trip using your own boat or taking a boat taxi from the Padasjoki Guest Harbour.
- Duration: about 2 h
- Trail markings: The trail is marked with blue markings. Roughly one kilometre after the start of the trail, the trail markings are red for a short time. The signs at some of the crossings are worn.
- Suitability: The section following the shoreline is fairly easy to navigate, and the changes in elevation are gentle. The rise to the observation tower is steeper.
From the car park, the trail goes towards the shores of Lake Päijänne through the forest. The path follows the shoreline closely. There is a campfire site and a pier for swimming at Cape Pyydysniemi. After Cape Pyydysniemi, you continue on the path along the shore. The hikers can decide along the way if they also want to visit the Päijätsalo observation tower in the middle of the island. The trail rises up somewhat towards the observation tower, but offers an impressive view over the forest and lake scenery of Päijätsalo and Lake Päijänne.
Good to know
There is one campfire site with a firewood supply along the way. There is also a toilet at the campfire site. You can reach the western starting point of the trail in Cape Pyydysniemi during the summer either with your own boat or by boat taxi from the Padasjoki Guest Harbour.
You can combine the trail with paths in the middle of the island as well as the climb up to the observation tower to make the trek longer and more challenging. The trail is also suitable for training shoes, but hiking shoes are sturdier in the rocky areas. There are information boards at both of the starting points of the trail.
